Course Formats: Scramble on Nov. 7, Challenge on Nov. 8

Welcome to our first double header of WNL Season 12! We are starting things off with a very exciting weekend for both Tier 1 and Tier 2 athletes. Saturday will feature the Scramble format, which is a new format we tested last season. Though still not an official WNL format, they are letting us do it again this season, and this time we’re offering it for both Tier 1 and Tier 2! Then on Sunday, we’ll be tweaking obstacles and setting some new courses for all of our athletes, with the Challenge Course format being used for Tier 1, and Full Course rules for Tier 2. You can choose to sign up for one or both competition days, with a discount applied for both days. Registration info and links are provided below.

Coaches

Per WNL rules, all coaches at this competition are REQUIRED to have an up-to-date WNL Floor Certification. At the time of registration, you will need to enter your coach name and coach Ninjaworks ID. It is your responsibility to communicate with your coach regarding their certification status. We are not able to follow up with every coach that may or may not be certified prior to the event. Upon arrival, certified coaches will receive a coach wristband for the event. Only certified coaches will be permitted on the floor, including rules walkthroughs and the athlete’s run. This includes parents and/or friends, even if you are not coaching.

More information on the WNL Floor Certification can be found here: https://worldninjaleague.org/coaching-certification/

The steps to complete this include:

  • Signing up for a Ninjaworks account, and adding a profile photo.
  • Completing the Floor Certification training and exam. Cost is $49.99 for new coaches, with discount if you’re recertifying.
  • Completing the Abuse Prevention Training through Safesport. Cost is $19, with discount if recertifying.
  • Background check via SportsEngine. Cost is $25.50 for US residents (good for five years), or $155 for international residents (good for 10 years).

A certified coach must complete ALL of the steps to be certified. If any of these steps are not completed, it will result in a status of “Pending” in Ninjaworks, which is not an acceptable status to receive a coach wristband.

Background checks can take additional time to clear, so be sure you complete all of this at least two weeks ahead of the competition to ensure you’re cleared.

Competition Rules

Scramble

  • Each athlete will be permitted one WNL certified coach to follow them through the courses.
  • This is a WNL Tier 1 and Tier 2 competition, with league points and regional qualifying spots (top 3 per division) just like a normal WNL qualifier.
  • There will be five short courses setup in the gym.
  • You will get a quick walkthrough and demo of each course, then athletes will go directly to the start of the courses and we’ll start the runs. You don’t get course planning time with this format, and that’s part of the challenge. Be sure you are warmed up and ready to go prior to the start of the rules walkthrough!
  • Athletes in each wave all run at the same time, and are given 30-45 minutes to run the courses as many times as they can. Waves with fewer than 15 athletes get 30 minutes, and waves with 16-25 athletes get 45 minutes.
  • Each course is scored separately based on your time from start to finish. You must pass the frontal plane of the finish platform to complete the course. There are no individual obstacle points on the courses.
  • Times are recorded at the end of each course. If you redo the course and get a faster time, the new time is recorded.
  • If you fail or reach the time cap on any course, you must exit that course and go back to the start, or find a different course to run. Athletes are not permitted to continue running a course if they failed or reached the time cap for that course!
  • There is no limit to the number of times you can fail, and no limit to the number of attempts you can have on any of the courses.
  • Each course will have time brackets for Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Platinum is worth 20 points, Gold is 15 points, Silver is 10 points, and Bronze is 5 points. For example, sub 10 seconds = Platinum, 10.01 – 14.00 sec = Gold, 14.01 – 17.00 sec = Silver, 17.01 – 24.00 sec = Bronze. Exact time brackets will vary across courses and athlete divisions.
  • Live leaderboards will be displayed for every wave so athletes can see which courses they need to go faster on. It is very helpful to have your coach/parent keep track of this for you, and let you know which courses you need to improve on!
  • Final scoring is based on how many points you get across all five courses. For example, if you got Platinum on three courses, Gold on one course, and silver on another course, your total score would be 20+20+15+10 (65). If athletes are tied for points, tie breakers are determined as follows:
    • Platinum (Most Platinums wins)
    • Gold (If Platinums are tied, most Golds wins)
    • Silver (If Platinums and Golds are tied, most Silvers wins)
    • Bronze (If Platinums, Golds, and Silvers are tied, most Bronzes wins)
    • If the athletes are still tied after the full medal comparison, the tie is broken by the sum of their course times. The athlete with the lower (faster) total course time is placed higher.

This is a great competition format for beginners, as it is low pressure and you get to retry the courses as many times as you can in 30 minutes. You get a LOT of time on obstacles compared to more traditional single course run formats. It’s also super fun for more experienced athletes – go for those big skips and see how much you can push your speed!
